Jaibhan Singh Pawaiya became the second president of the Bajrang Dal in India after Vinay Katiyar and was succeeded by physician Surendra Jain. Pawaiya, a full-time pracharak joined the political wing, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). He was the party's Lok Sabha member in 1999 from Gwalior (Madhya Pradesh), but he lost the polls in 2004 from Gwalior by a very narrow margin. He stoutly defended the Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) and the Bajrang Dal in the March 2002 Ramjanmabhoomi campaign when all BJP leaders were disassociating themselves from the VHP.
